Sullia, Dec 28: After the father of a student assaulted a teacher who had come home to escort his son to school, a police complaint was lodged by the school development and monitoring committee (SDMC).

Tej Kumar, a resident of Kudreppaya, has been accused of beating the teacher. His son, Vikas, a ninth standard student of Aletty government high school in the taluk, had remained absent from his school without permission since a week. He used to attend school from the home of his maternal grandfather, as there is no school in the vicinity of his father’s home. On Tuesday, he was advised by family members to attend school. Protesting against this insistence, Vikas threatened to jump into a well and end his life, if they continued to pester him.

Angered by the boy’s attitude, grandfather of Vikas, Ramanna Gowda, confined the boy to a room and called up teacher, Hariprasad, to his home over phone to personally escort his grandson to school. As there is a provision under government rules for teachers to visit homes of students remaining absent, the teacher went to the student’s home. Father of Vikas, Tej Kumar, who was a on a visit to his in-law’s house then, slapped the teacher.

Ramanna Gowda was angry at the attitude of his son-in-law.  When the teacher threatened Tej Kumar of filing police complaint, he said he and his son would commit suicide together if he does so. The teacher then conveyed this information to SDMC members, who filed a police complaint against Tej Kumar.

Sullia Taluk Teachers Association has stood by the teacher, and condemned the incident. The complaint stands registered, and investigation has begun.
