Mangaluru: Wenlock Hospital to receive advanced eye care equipment from MRPL

Media Release

Mangaluru, Jan 7: Government Wenlock Hospital, is set to elevate its eye care services with the addition of two state-of-the-art ophthalmology devices: the Topcon 3D Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and the Topcon Slit Lamp. These advanced tools are being provided by Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) through its CSR initiative, Arogya Samrakshan, at a cost of Rs 30 lac.

Dr Ajay Kamath, head of the ophthalmology department, highlighted the beneficial impact of this initiative. "These advanced devices will benefit nearly 4,000 to 5,000 patients annually, particularly from underprivileged sections of society. Early detection through this equipment can significantly improve treatment outcomes. In the past, we had to refer critical cases to other hospitals, which posed challenges for economically weaker patients," he stated.

Wenlock Hospital is renowned as one of the best-managed government hospitals, catering not only to patients from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts but also from regions like Hassan, Kasaragod, and Davangere. In recent years, there has been a notable increase in patients visiting from neighboring districts, underlining the hospital's vital role in regional healthcare.

The equipment was formally handed over through a Letter of Intent (LoI) presented by MRPL o officer Steevan Pinto to the District Medical Officer (DMO) of Wenlock Hospital.
About the equipment

Topcon 3D OCT

This advanced imaging device uses light waves to capture detailed images of the eye's internal layers. It aids in detecting early signs of serious eye conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye diseases. Its 3D imaging capabilities provide specialists with clearer insights into eye health, enabling timely and effective treatment.

Topcon Slit Lamp

A vital diagnostic tool, the Topcon Slit Lamp acts like a highly precise magnifying glass for the eyes. It allows detailed examination of the eye’s surface and deeper layers, helping to identify cataracts, corneal issues, dry eyes, and even foreign objects.

GGM HR of MRPL Krishna Hegde Miyar highlighted that ‘MRPL’s CSR initiative, Arogya Samrakshan, continues to support healthcare improvements in the region, ensuring quality medical care is accessible to all, particularly the most vulnerable sections of society’.
