Udupi, Dec 30: Former MLA, U R Sabhapaty, announced that a memorial will be built for former Chief Minister, S  Bangarappa, in the heart of the town, at a cost of one crore rupees.  He said that a trust will be formed for the purpose.

He was addressing a condolence meeting organized at Billava Seva Sangha auditorium in Bannanje here on Wednesday December 28, to pay tributes to Bangarappa. “Both Congress and BJP benefitted by the sway Bangarappa had over masses, in wresting power in the state. He was the only personality from the state, who could dare to give birth to new parties like Karnataka Kranti Ranga, Krantikari Socialist Party, Karnataka Congress and Karnataka Vikasa Party. Bangarappa was partially successful in building regional parties. In 2004, BJP could secure over 79 seats by using the influence of Bangarppa,” he felt.

Sabhapaty reasoned that many stalwarts like himself, Vasant Salian and Vinay Kumar Sorake got defeated from this district because of Bangarappa’s campaigning for the BJP candidates, and not because of any impact BJP had on the voters.

D R Raju from Karkala, who was present at the meeting, announced initial donation of one lac rupees as corpus for the trust being set up for the purpose.

Former MP, Vinay Kumar Sorake, zilla panchayat president, Katapadi Shankar Poojary, MLC, Kota Srinivas Poojary, former minister, Vasant V Salian, municipal president, Kiran Kumar, JDS district president, Deviprasad Shetty, KPCC secretary, M A Gafoor, former chairman of Udupi Urban Development Authority, B Sudhakar Shetty, and many others took part in the programme.
