Washington, Jan 12: On Sunday, US President Joe Biden awarded Pope Francis the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction, recognizing the pontiff's global influence and contributions to humanity. This honor comes just days before Biden's departure from the White House.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), President Biden expressed his admiration for Pope Francis, referring to him as the "People’s Pope" and praising his compassion and leadership.
"Pope Francis, your humility and your grace are beyond words, and your love for all is unparalleled. As the People’s Pope, you are a light of faith, hope, and love that shines brightly across the world," Biden stated.
In an official White House statement, it was noted that President Biden personally informed Pope Francis of the honor. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian award in the United States, granted to individuals who demonstrate "exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal endeavors."
This ceremony marked the first instance of Biden presenting the medal with distinction during his tenure.
The Hill reported that President Biden, the second Catholic president in US history, initially planned to visit Rome for the occasion but canceled the trip due to the wildfires in Los Angeles.
Biden had intended to meet Pope Francis and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Italy as part of his final international trip as president. Instead, the two leaders engaged virtually to mark the occasion.
The President and the Pope last met in June during Biden’s visit to Italy for the G7 summit and previously in October 2021, amid discussions by conservative Catholic bishops regarding Biden’s stance on abortion rights and eligibility for communion.
