Shan Masood backs two-tier test system, calls for fair competition and more matches

New Delhi, Jan 17: Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood has expressed his support for the proposed two-tier system in Test cricket but emphasized the need for a relegation and promotion structure to ensure excitement and fairness.

"If there is a two-tier system, it has to be exciting. If implemented, it should operate on a relegation and promotion basis," Masood told Telecom Asia Sport.

The proposal, which will be discussed later this month by Cricket Australia chair Mike Baird, ECB chief Richard Thompson, and BCCI representatives in a meeting with ICC Chairman Jay Shah, aims to introduce the system starting in 2027. It is expected to increase matches among the "big three" nations—India, England, and Australia.

Masood stressed that the system should benefit all teams and maintain competitiveness. "It should support all teams, allowing them to play each other in a competitive manner. It should be attractive for fans and fair for all members," he added.

The Pakistan captain also voiced concerns about the limited number of Tests played by many nations, including Pakistan, in the current World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. "We want more Test cricket. Playing just four or five Tests, a year is insufficient. For Pakistan, the long gaps between series make it difficult to maintain momentum," Masood explained.

The proposed two-tier system will be closely watched as the ICC deliberates its future plans to enhance the appeal and structure of red-ball cricket.
