Udupi, Jan 19: A prayer meeting was held on Sunday Jan 17, at St Ann’s Church, Thottam, as part of the Christian Unity Week celebrations.

Delivering the message, Fr Cyril Lobo, director of the Bible commission of the Udupi diocese, emphasized that Jesus Christ taught the lesson of brotherhood to His followers. He highlighted that while Christianity is recognized through various denominations today, the unity in Christ is a significant identity. He added that such weeks of prayer serve as an excellent medium to bring people together. “Sharing the good in other denominations and praying together is the essence of Christian Unity Week. Just as we share meals together, this initiative should inspire us to pray together in unity,” he said.

Praveen Maben, pastor of CSI Christ Mahima Church, Manipura, spoke about the importance of finding unity in Christ. He encouraged individuals to transcend differences in thoughts and work towards collective unity during the week.

Kumar Salins, pastor of UBM Ebenezer Church, Malpe, noted that despite being divided into various denominations, Christians share the common foundation of Jesus Christ. “The love and forgiveness of Christ should serve as a guiding light in our lives. Each one of us must contribute towards building a healthy society, promoting truth, love, and peace in our pluralistic communities,” he remarked.

Fr Denis D’Sa, the parish priest of St Ann’s Church, Thottam, who led the prayer meeting, shared insights about Christian Unity Week, celebrated annually from January 18–25. This year marked the 1700th anniversary of the event. He stated that the week includes prayer meetings and various activities to unite all Christian congregations.

The prayer meeting featured hymns presented by the choir groups of CSI Church Malpe, UBM Ebenezer Church Malpe, and St Ann’s Church Thottam.

The event was attended by Sunil Fernandes, vice president of the St Ann’s Church pastoral committee; Blesilla Crasta, secretary; Vanitha Fernandes, coordinator of 20 commissions; the Sisters of St Anne’s Convent; church ward leaders; and congregants from the three participating churches.

Fr Denis D’Sa welcomed the gathering, while Gilbert Pinto delivered the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Gracy Pinto.
