Karkala, Jan 3: Renowned Kannada writer, S L Bhyrappa, announced that he has decided not to participate in lecture programmes for a year after February 6 this year. He made this decision clear at a programme of interaction and felicitation organized in his honour by Sahitya Sangha here on Monday January 2.

The programme was held at Sambhrama Hall of Hotel Prakash here.

“I will be fully devoting my time for a year for the release of my two works. If I attend lecture programmes, my literary studies will suffer,” he revealed. He also thanked the people for the felicitation offered to him, saying that the practice of felicitating artists and writers, which has been in vogue since ancient times, encourages the concerned to further serve the respective fields.  He also expressed the opinion that the writers and artists who get government aid for their literary or art works, lose their freedom. Hence, he argued that government funds should not go these fields.

Speaking about his much-appreciated novel, ‘Mandra’, he noted that ancient society did not berate female artistes, as is wrongly perceived, in the past. He noted that dance and music suffered at the hands of Muslim rulers who felt that these art forms give impetus to lust. While noting that his works have received both appreciation and opposition, he said he never writes anything to appease anyone. He also revealed that he does not critically analyze the works of others, as this skill needs training and time, both of which he does not have.

Aravind Hebbar, Dr Girish Ajakala, Dr Nanda J Pai and Sudharani, participated in the interaction. MLA, Gopal Bhandary, MLC, Capt Ganesh Karnik, writer, Erya Lakshminarayana Alva, and office bearers of the Sangha were present.
