Mangaluru, Jan 22: In a determined effort to curb excise-related violations, the excise department in Dakshina Kannada district has registered 31 major cases and seized property worth Rs 9.31 crore between July 2024 and now, according to a statement by the deputy commissioner of excise.

The department has been rigorously conducting enforcement and investigation operations to prevent illegal activities. As part of the crackdown, authorities seized 115.350 litres of Goa liquor, 47.250 litres of defence liquor, 140.940 litres of illicit liquor, 56.570 litres of beer, 244.920 litres of wine, 115 litres of toddy, 92 litres of jaggery wash, and 64.750 litres of illicitly distilled alcohol, totalling 876.780 litres. Four vehicles were also confiscated.

The department has been issuing temporary CL-5 licenses for serving alcohol at weddings, meetings, and other events, ensuring thorough verification of these permits.

To prevent unauthorized liquor supply, excise officials have been attending functions and gatherings in plain clothes to avoid inconveniencing the public. The supply of unauthorized Goa and defence liquor has been effectively curtailed.

During the fiscal year 2023-24, 432 temporary permits were issued between April 2023 and January 15, 2024. From April 2024 to January 15 this year, the number of temporary permits issued has risen to 865, the statement added.
