Mangaluru, Feb 13: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) have been actively involved in development projects and the renovation of traffic circles across the city. Two years ago, Narayana Guru Circle (formerly known as Ladyhill Circle) was inaugurated at a cost of Rs 50 lac. However, due to a lack of proper maintenance, its condition has deteriorated significantly.
Authorities have largely overlooked the upkeep of developmental works in Mangaluru. The outer portion of Narayana Guru Circle is severely damaged, possibly due to vehicle collisions while turning from Lalbagh towards Chilimbi. Broken fragments lie scattered on the road, raising concerns over whether these damages are the result of accidents.

The inner portion of the circle also shows clear signs of neglect. The red laterite stones are broken, and stagnant, contaminated fountain water has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The outer circle has completely shattered into pieces and scattered across the road. It remains uncertain whether the fountain and its lights are still operational. Meanwhile, the grass and plants around the circle have dried up due to a lack of watering, further diminishing its appearance.
From a distance, Narayana Guru Circle still appears visually appealing and stands as a focal point in this prime city location. However, a closer look reveals its deteriorating condition, making it a growing concern for residents.
Congress leader Padmaraj stated, "As a follower of Brahmashree Narayana Guru, it is disheartening to witness the poor condition of the circle named after him. Concerns have previously been raised about the maintenance of the Narayana Guru Circle and brought to the attention of the MCC, but the authorities have failed to address the issue. People believe that leaders show respect to Narayana Guru by delivering speeches and garlanding his statue at the circle, but unfortunately, their actions do not reflect their words. While the outer area may have been damaged due to an accident, the interior of the circle is in a deplorable state, with issues such as poor water quality, overgrown plants, and unkempt grass. I urge the concerned authorities to take immediate action to repair the circle."
Mayor Manoj Kumar responded, "We are aware of the damage to the Narayana Guru Circle, and it appears that a vehicle may have collided with it, causing the harm. We will work with the police to track down the responsible vehicle and ensure that the individual covers the cost of repairing the circle."
The public continues to question the lack of maintenance for various developmental projects in Mangaluru, which remain in plain sight yet are left neglected. MUDA and MCC must take immediate action to restore and maintain these circles and other infrastructure projects across the city.
