Davanagere retired teacher could be state’s first to opt for passive euthanasia

Daijiworld Media Network – Davanagere

Davanagere, Feb 15: The Karnataka government has decided to implement the Supreme Court’s directive allowing passive euthanasia, and 85-year-old retired teacher H B Karibasamma from Davanagere may become the first beneficiary.

Karibasamma, who has suffered from a slipped disc for over three decades, was recently diagnosed with cancer. As her health deteriorates, she has been advocating for the right to die with dignity for the past 24 years, writing to the Prime Minister, President, and Supreme Court. Although the Supreme Court legalized passive euthanasia in 2018, Karnataka is now moving to enforce the ruling.

Speaking about the government's decision, Karibasamma said that many people have been waiting for this right, and she believes she could be the first to benefit.

Living with her husband in Davanagere, Karibasamma has lost her wealth, health, and family ties due to her prolonged illness. For the past 20 years, she has been residing in a care home and recently donated her remaining savings of ?6 lakh to the welfare of BSF personnel.

With no close family support, Karibasamma now awaits the state’s approval for her request for passive euthanasia.

life is a gift from God and should not be prematurely shortened. Intentionally causing one’s own death, or suicide, is therefore equally as wrong as murder; such an action on the part of a person is to be considered as a rejection of God’s sovereignty and loving plan.

Seems heartbreaking yet this is a pragmatic thinking. Terminal illness with unbearable pain is worse than any death. Only thing is this provision must not be misused and only be carried out after due diligence from the highest district offices i.e. DC, District Judge and District Health Officer. Also it should have official willingness from the person who wants passive euthanasia. as for karibasamma my sincere wishes for a smooth sailing into the Arms of The Almighty.
