Mangaluru city police collect Rs 6.66 crore in traffic fines in 2024, intensify road safety measures

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Feb 18: The Mangaluru city police collected Rs 6.66 crore in fines for traffic violations in 2024, booking 1.44 lac cases over the year.

With three national highways and multiple state highways intersecting city roads, Mangaluru witnesses an alarming number of road accidents. On average, 166 people lose their lives, and 1,130 sustain injuries in road mishaps annually. The city records approximately four accidents daily, with the total number of incidents ranging between 991 and 1,000 each year. A recent analysis by the Mangaluru city police revealed that nearly 76% of road fatalities involve pedestrians and motorcycle riders.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, the report emphasized the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic rules to enhance public safety.

Authorities have identified 16 accident-prone ‘black spots’ based on recurring mishaps. To mitigate risks, targeted interventions such as improved signage, road redesign, and stricter enforcement of traffic laws are being implemented.

Despite frequent accidents, public awareness about the severity of road safety remains low, leading to a sense of complacency. The report stressed the need for enhanced education on traffic regulations and accident statistics.

To bolster highway safety, seven patrolling vehicles have been deployed across the city’s highways. These units respond swiftly to accident sites and take necessary measures to manage emergencies. Additionally, police have intensified action against illegally parked vehicles, ensuring smooth traffic flow and preventing congestion, particularly for emergency services.

The city police have also submitted a detailed plan to the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) for improving traffic junctions. This proposal outlines strategic interventions and expected outcomes. The police will collaborate with the National Highways Authority of India, the State Highway Department, the Public Works Department, MCC, Mangaluru Smart City Ltd, and the Regional Transport Office to implement these measures effectively.

In addition to enforcing traffic laws, Mangaluru city police have conducted awareness programmes in schools and colleges to educate students about traffic regulations and safe road usage. These initiatives aim to instill responsible driving habits from an early age, contributing to long-term improvements in road safety.

Kudos Mangaluru police. What is meant by " intensify road safety measures" ? Catching two wheelers? While talking about the safety measures, first repair the roads or book the bad contractors.
