Kerala HC reserves verdict on BJP leader P C George's bail plea in hate speech case

Kochi, Feb 19: The Kerala High Court, in a strong oral observation, criticized senior BJP leader P.C. George while reserving its verdict on his anticipatory bail plea in a hate speech case. The case pertains to alleged inflammatory remarks against the Muslim community during a TV debate.

Justice P.V. Kunhikrishnan emphasized that India is a secular country and warned against the misuse of caste and religion to incite division. "For a first offense, one may escape with a fine; for a second, the penalty increases. But for such offenses, a mandatory jail sentence is necessary," the judge remarked.

George, 73, has had a long political career, switching between parties before merging his outfit with the BJP ahead of the 2024 general elections. His counsel argued that he was provoked during the debate and had already apologized, insisting there was no intent to spread hatred.

However, the state government opposed his bail, highlighting past instances where George had allegedly made similar remarks. The court noted his history of violations, stating, "He is not an ordinary man. When the High Court issues warnings, and you continue to ignore them, what is the solution?"

George has previously secured bail in two similar cases. With the court reserving its order, he must now await the final decision.
