Musk led efficiency drive sparks federal workforce controversy

Washington, Feb 23: US federal employees received an abrupt email late Saturday demanding a summary of their weekly work accomplishments by Monday night, with non-compliance potentially resulting in job termination, according to media reports.

The directive was issued shortly after billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, serving as President Donald Trump’s chief cost-cutting advisor, announced the ultimatum on the social media platform X, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Musk, who oversees the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under the Trump administration, made it clear on X that failing to respond to the email would be considered a resignation.

“All federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week,” Musk posted. “Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.”

His post followed a statement from President Trump on Truth Social urging DOGE to intensify efforts in downsizing and restructuring the 2.3 million-strong federal workforce.

In line with this directive, thousands of federal employees—including judges, court staff, and federal prison officials—received a concise three-line email instructing them to submit five bullet points detailing their work accomplishments from the past week and to copy their managers.

The deadline for submission was set at 11:59 p.m. on Monday. However, the email itself did not mention Musk’s warning about termination for those who failed to comply, the Associated Press reported.

The Trump administration has already implemented significant cuts, with thousands of federal workers either dismissed or offered buyouts in an effort to streamline government operations.

While Trump has frequently praised Musk as the de facto leader of DOGE, the White House clarified in a recent court filing that Musk holds no official authority over the department and is not a government employee.
