Brussels, Feb 24: Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar stated on Monday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government is open to extending the ceasefire agreement with Hamas if it leads to the release of more hostages.
Speaking in Brussels during diplomatic meetings with European Union officials, Sa'ar emphasized that Israel remains committed to securing the freedom of its hostages while pursuing its war objectives. "We do not rule out an extension of the temporary ceasefire in exchange for the release of additional hostages," he said, making it clear that any extension would only occur under these conditions.

During discussions with the foreign ministers of Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Finland, and Slovakia at the 13th EU-Israel Association Council, Sa'ar also highlighted the growing threat posed by Iran. He urged European nations to strengthen sanctions against Tehran, warning that Iran’s actions jeopardize regional peace.
Earlier in the day, he met with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, raising concerns about the Palestinian Authority's continued financial support for individuals convicted of terrorism. "The Palestinian Authority must stop its incitement against Israel, particularly within its education system," he said.
Sa'ar also expressed gratitude to Metsola for her vocal support of Israel following the October 7 attacks. The meeting addressed the broader relationship between Israel and the EU, with Sa'ar advocating for stronger and more constructive ties.
He called on the EU to ensure that its financial aid is not misused, reiterating that Palestinian leadership must change its policies regarding financial incentives linked to terrorism. "The European Union must guarantee that its support funds are not directed towards such activities," he stated.
The discussions in Brussels reflect Israel’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure international backing for its policies while working toward the release of hostages and ensuring regional security.
