Liverpool, Feb 27: Liverpool continued their dominant run in the Premier League, securing a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at Anfield on Wednesday night. With this win, the Reds have extended their lead at the top of the table to 13 points, while second-placed Arsenal slipped further behind after a draw against Nottingham Forest.
The match kicked off in torrential rain, but the adverse weather conditions did little to deter Liverpool’s attacking intent. The hosts started brightly and were soon rewarded when Dominik Szoboszlai netted Liverpool’s 100th goal of the 2024-25 season.

The Hungarian midfielder capitalized on a well-crafted move, as Luis Diaz charged down the left flank and delivered a precise pass to Szoboszlai, who struck a first-time finish into the net with a slight deflection, beating Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope.
Newcastle attempted to respond and came close to leveling the score. Callum Wilson managed to break free from Liverpool’s defensive line, evading the offside trap, but his shot went off target while facing Alisson Becker one-on-one.
Liverpool nearly doubled their lead before the break, with Mohamed Salah and Szoboszlai both forcing saves with curling efforts on goal.
The second half saw a series of stoppages due to injuries, disrupting the flow of the game. However, Liverpool remained in control and capitalized on their first real chance after the interval.
In the 63rd minute, Alexis Mac Allister won possession high up the pitch, initiated an attacking move, and completed it with a sublime lofted finish into the far corner. Salah played a crucial role in the goal, holding up play before laying off a well-timed assist to Mac Allister.
Liverpool’s defense remained firm, with Alisson making a key save to maintain the two-goal cushion, palming away a dangerous deflected cross. The Reds nearly added a third when Salah delivered an exquisite outside-of-the-boot cross, but Diaz narrowly missed the target with a sliding attempt.
Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope prevented further damage, making a crucial late save to deny Salah, but the hosts comfortably saw out the remainder of the match.
With this win, Liverpool continue their march towards the Premier League title, widening the gap at the top and showcasing their dominance once again.
