Trump sets boundaries for Musk, limits DOGE’s role in govt layoffs

Daijiworld Media Network - Washington

Washington, Mar 8: Former US President Donald Trump has drawn clear boundaries for Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), asserting that final decisions on government hirings and firings will rest with department heads, not Musk.

During a high-level cabinet meeting on March 6, Trump reassured his officials that while DOGE may recommend cost-cutting measures, it will only serve in an advisory capacity. His remarks come amid growing concerns over Musk’s aggressive push to streamline federal agencies, which included asking employees to justify their roles or face termination.

"We say the scalpel rather than the hatchet," Trump posted on Truth Social, emphasizing a careful approach to restructuring.

Musk, who attended the meeting, admitted to some missteps but described the discussion as 'very productive.' Political pressure has been mounting over DOGE's influence, with Senate leaders insisting that cabinet secretaries not Musk should have the final say on government employment.

Social media was abuzz with reactions to Trump's intervention, with many noting that Musk's authority had been significantly curtailed. While the future of DOGE remains uncertain, one thing is clear—Trump has drawn the Lakshman Rekha.
