Shimoga diocese inaugurates Catholic Think Tank to foster intellectual, social leadership

Shivmogga, Mar 15: The Catholic Think Tank of the Shimoga diocese was officially inaugurated at Sannidhi, Shimoga, under the leadership of the laity commission. The event marked a significant step in fostering intellectual engagement and leadership within the church.

The programme commenced with a prayer led by Msgr Stany D’Souza, the vicar general of the diocese. Delivering the inaugural message, Bishop Francis Serrao emphasized the crucial role of the Think Tank in addressing contemporary societal challenges. He highlighted how the Catholic church has always been at the forefront of intellectual and social movements, and this initiative would empower the laity to contribute more actively to public discourse. He stressed that in a rapidly changing world, it is essential for Catholics to engage in critical thinking, informed discussions, and proactive leadership to uphold Christian values and work for the common good.

Fr Sudeep Paul, MSFS, director of Sandesha, provided an in-depth overview of the think tank’s aims, objectives, structure, and functioning. He highlighted how this initiative could serve both the Church and society in meaningful ways.

Roy Castelino, president of the regional Think Tank, delivered an address, urging participants to actively engage in public service and become role models in their communities. He stressed the importance of tackling social issues while upholding values that benefit both humanity and the church.

Following the addresses, Fr Steevan D’Sa facilitated group discussions and conducted the election of office bearers. The elected members are:

• President: William Martis

• Vice president: Irene D’Souza

• Secretary: Arogya Swamy

• Joint secretary: Thomas

Bishop Francis Serrao outlined the responsibilities of the newly elected members, encouraging them to lead with vision and dedication. He also appointed Fr Steevan D’Sa as the director and Sr Theresa Mascarenhas SCB as the assistant director of the Catholic Think Tank, Shimoga Unit.

The event concluded with vote of thanks by Anthony Dias, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries and participants. A prayer and a fellowship meal brought the historic occasion to a close, marking the beginning of and new intellectual and leadership platform for Catholics in the diocese.
