Udupi: MAHE organises 'Magu Nagu' to promote oral health for special children

Udupi, Mar 25: Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) organised the 'Magu Nagu’, oral health screening and treatment programme for special kids' to promote oral health among children with special needs in Udupi. This initiative was part of the World Oral Health Day 2025 celebrations under the theme, “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Mind.”

The Prasanna School of Public Health (PSPH), Manipal, in collaboration with the Manipal College of Dental Sciences (MCODS), Manipal took part in this endeavour.

Magu Nagu' provided free dental check-ups and treatments for the children at Asha Nilaya and Vocational Rehabilitation Center for Special Kids in Udupi. The aim was to ensure these children receive proper dental care while also raising awareness about the importance of oral hygiene.

The programme was led by Dr Brayal D'Souza, associate professor, department of Healthcare and Hospital Management, Dr Ramprasad VP, professor and head of the department of Public Health Dentistry, and Dr Navya Vyas, department of Global Public Health Policy and Governance. A dedicated team of students and faculty from MCODS and PSPH worked together to create a welcoming and supportive environment for the children.

Dr Cherian Varghese, director, PSPH, stated, "Good oral health is fundamental to overall well-being, especially for children with special needs who often face challenges accessing healthcare. This initiative reflects our commitment to inclusive health services."

Dr Monica Solomon, dean of MCODS Manipal, added, “Through 'Magu Nagu,' we wanted to create a positive and supportive space for these children while ensuring they receive necessary dental care. Our combined efforts help bring smiles to their faces and contribute to their overall development.”

The 'Magu Nagu' programme reinforced MAHE’s dedication to promoting health initiatives that make a difference in the lives of special children.
