Mangalore University to confer honorary doctorate on Rohan Monteiro, two others on Mar 29

Mangaluru, Mar 28: “Managing director of Rohan Corporation Rohan Monteiro, philanthropist Kanyana Sadashiv Shetty and president of SCDCC Bank Dr Rajendra Kumar will be conferred with honorary doctorates during the 43rd annual convocation of Mangalore University on March 29 at 11 am in Mangala auditorium, Mangalore University campus,” informed vice chancellor Prof P L Dharma.

Addressing media on Friday March 28, he further said, “As many as 15 applications were received for the honorary doctorates. Three were selected for doctorates in the field of social service.

“Prof V N Rajasekharan Pillai, vice president, Association of Indian Universities & vice-chancellor, Somiya Vidyavihar University, Mumbai, will be the chief guest and deliver the convocation address. Governor of Karnataka and the chancellor of the university Thawar Chand Gehlot will preside and confer the degrees to all the candidates. Dr M C Sudhakar, minister for higher education, government of Karnataka and the pro-chancellor of the university will participate and grace the occasion.

“In the convocation, Mangalore University will award 64 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees—12 in Arts, 38 in science, 11 in commerce, and 3 in education. Among the 64 PhD candidates, 31 (48.43%) are women and 33 (51.56%) are men. Additionally, 2 male and 1 female candidates are foreign nationals.

“A total of 54 gold medals and 56 cash prizes will be awarded. There are 127 rank holders in total, of which 67 students (49 from postgraduate and 18 from undergraduate programmes) have secured first ranks. The distribution among faculties is as follows: 18 in arts, 39 in science and technology, 8 in commerce, and 2 in education.

“A total of 25,387 students appeared for the postgraduate (PG) and undergraduate (UG) university examinations, out of which 18,723 (73.75%) students passed. Among them, 6,896 (36.83%) are boys, 11,826 (63.16%) are girls, and 1 is a transgender student.

“In PG programmes, 3,331 students appeared for the examinations, including 1 transgender candidate. Out of them, 3,152 (94.63%) have passed. Among the successful candidates, 906 are boys, 2,245 are girls, and 1 is a transgender student.

“In UG programmes, 22,056 students appeared for the examinations, of whom 15,571 (70.60%) have passed. Among them, 5,990 are boys and 9,581 are girls,” he said.
