Washington, Apr 4: Six individuals were injured in a shocking stabbing incident in Washington’s Trinidad neighbourhood on Thursday afternoon, with the suspect now in police custody.

The violent episode unfolded around 3:22 p.m. near Montello Avenue and Meigs Place NE, after a man reportedly under the influence of an unknown substance began attacking people at random.

According to Washington Police Chief Pamela Smith, the suspect, said to be in an "altered mental state," first stabbed himself before targeting a female acquaintance walking with him. The rampage continued, injuring several bystanders, including two good Samaritans who attempted to intervene.

“The suspect was found lying on the ground nearby, with a knife believed to have been used in the assault recovered just a few feet away,” Smith informed the media. The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was rushed to the hospital and is currently undergoing surgery.

The victims, comprising four women and two men, were transported to area hospitals. Fortunately, all are reported to be in stable condition, and their injuries are not considered life-threatening. Among the injured are a grandmother and her two granddaughters, Smith confirmed.

“This incident underscores the urgent need for addressing substance abuse issues in our communities,” remarked Smith, highlighting the broader issue at play.

The Metropolitan Police Department promptly issued an alert on X, urging anyone with information to contact 202-727-9099 or text 50411.

Authorities have cordoned off several nearby roads as investigations continue.
