Lucknow, Apr 5: Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson heaped praise on Lucknow Super Giants’ young spinner Digvesh Rathi, whose economical spell played a key role in his side’s thrilling 12-run win over Mumbai Indians in their IPL 2025 clash at the Ekana Stadium on Friday.
Rathi, who finished with figures of 1-21 in his four overs, stood out in a high-scoring match where most bowlers struggled to contain runs. As MI chased a steep target of 204, Rathi was the only LSG bowler to bowl with an economy rate below six, while the likes of Shardul Thakur, Akash Deep, and Ravi Bishnoi all conceded 40 or more runs in their respective spells.
Speaking on JioHotstar, Watson was all praise for the youngster. “It seemed like he was born to perform on this IPL stage. He wasn’t reserved he was out there, beating his chest, showing confidence, and executing beautifully. What stands out about Digvesh is how simple he keeps his game. His control over length is what makes him so dangerous,” Watson said.
“In a high-scoring game, conceding just 21 runs in four overs is something special. Performances like this remind me of Sunil Narine. That’s why he deservedly took home the Man of the Match award,” he added.
Watson also lauded Lucknow’s collective effort and resilience following their previous defeat against Punjab Kings.
“That was a strong comeback. It shows character. Avesh Khan and Shardul Thakur might not be seen as top-tier death bowlers, but they stepped up when it mattered. Their execution in the final overs was outstanding,” he noted.
The former cricketer also highlighted the team’s fielding, crediting Nicholas Pooran’s spirited presence on the field as a key factor.
“Pooran was throwing himself around, and that energy was infectious. The entire team was locked in. That’s what makes the difference in close matches,” Watson remarked.
He was especially impressed with Shardul Thakur’s performance at the death, calling it a statement spell.
“Shardul was under pressure, bowling to an in-form Hardik Pandya. But he nailed his yorkers and held his nerve. To bowl a seven-run over in that situation shows grit. For someone who went unsold in the auction and came in as a free agent, this was a huge moment,” Watson said.
With this win, LSG not only picked up crucial points but also sent a strong message about their depth and fighting spirit in this season’s IPL.
