Mumbai, Apr 6: Celebrated actor Rohit Roy, who first made waves as Rishabh Malhotra in Doordarshan’s iconic serial Swabhimaan, has announced a sequel to the much-loved drama as the show completes 30 years since its premiere.
Taking to Instagram, Rohit penned an emotional note as he marked the anniversary of his debut and the show's historic release on April 6, 1995. “It’s my Birthday again today!! My professional one of course!! 30 years back today, the April 6, 1995, Swabhimaan released on Doordarshan and took the country by storm…And Rishabh Malhotra was born!" he wrote, sharing nostalgic clips from the original series.
Expressing heartfelt gratitude to fans, Rohit added, “3 decades later, the love keeps pouring in. I cannot ever thank my fans enough for the continued love and affection! I will never be able to repay you in this lifetime. I am what I am today because of you all.”
In a surprise announcement that thrilled long-time fans, the actor revealed, “PS: Swabhimaan 2 coming soon !!!” While further details of the sequel remain under wraps, speculation is already rife about Rohit reprising his role and how the storyline will evolve in the new chapter.
Swabhimaan, directed by Mahesh Bhatt, told the gripping tale of Svetlana (played by Kitu Gidwani), the pampered mistress of tycoon Keshav Malhotra, who finds herself alone and under siege after his untimely death. The serial was lauded for its bold themes and powerful performances.
The original ensemble also featured Abhimanyu Singh, Anju Mahendru, Deepak Parashar, Kunika, Channa Ruparel, and Prabha Sinha, among others.
With Swabhimaan 2 on the horizon, fans of Indian television are eagerly awaiting the return of one of the most iconic dramas of the 90s.
