‘Eetha’ is inspired by the extraordinary life of Vithabai Bhau Mang Narayangaonkar, one of Maharashtra's most celebrated Marathi folk artistes, Lavani dancers and Tamasha performers.
Born into a family of traditional Tamasha artistes, Vithabai developed a passion for singing, dancing and acting at a very young age. Through her exceptional talent, expressive performances and dedication, she went on to earn a distinguished place in Maharashtra's folk art tradition.
Popularly known as the ‘Tamasha Samradni’ (Empress of Tamasha), she received national recognition and Presidential honours for her contribution to folk culture.
Her life was marked by courage, perseverance and unwavering commitment to traditional art forms. Despite facing personal and financial hardships, she continued to preserve and promote Maharashtra's folk traditions. She also worked towards the welfare of fellow Tamasha artistes.
In recognition of her contribution, the Maharashtra government instituted the Vithabai Narayangaonkar Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 to honour outstanding contributions to the Tamasha tradition.
