Mumbai, Apr 9: Veteran actress and five-time National Award winner Shabana Azmi recently encapsulated her illustrious film career in a single powerful word — “Arth.” Speaking to IANS, she credited the iconic 1982 film as the turning point that launched her active involvement in the women’s movement in India.
“If I had to sum up my cinematic journey in one sentence, it would be ‘Arth’, because that’s where my journey with the women’s movement began,” said Shabana.
Directed by Mahesh Bhatt, Arth starred Shabana Azmi, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Smita Patil, and Raj Kiran. The critically acclaimed film, listed among the 25 must-watch Bollywood classics, revolves around a woman’s quest for identity after her filmmaker husband leaves her for an actress. The film was later remade in Tamil as Marupadiyum.
The role Shabana portrayed resonated deeply with audiences. She revealed that post-release, women would often approach her for guidance and support—an experience that propelled her into a lifelong commitment to gender equity and social causes.
Speaking at the launch event of Antara AGEasy, a wellness initiative for seniors, the septuagenarian shared her zest for life and curiosity remains intact. “Life in its entirety is yet to be explored. While I can’t do adventurous things anymore—it would be foolish—I still want to! I don’t need much,” she said with a smile.
Having made her debut with Ankur in 1974, Shabana Azmi has since appeared in over 160 films, many rooted in India’s parallel cinema movement. Known for her portrayal of strong, unconventional women, Shabana continues to inspire with her dedication to both her craft and her causes
