Mohali, Apr 9: Punjab Kings’ experienced allrounder Glenn Maxwell has been fined 25% of his match fees and handed one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team’s 18-run victory against Chennai Super Kings at the New PCA Stadium on Tuesday night.

According to an official IPL release, Maxwell admitted to a Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to the “abuse of fixtures and fittings during the match.” The Match Referee’s decision is final and binding for Level 1 offences.

Article 2.2 of the code deals with behaviour such as intentionally or recklessly damaging cricket equipment, ground infrastructure, advertising boards, dressing room furniture or other fixtures. This can include actions like swinging a bat in frustration and causing damage.

The incident occurred during an intense moment in the match, although specific details of Maxwell’s action were not disclosed.

Despite the off-field controversy, PBKS delivered a clinical performance to defeat CSK. Young sensation Priyansh Arya starred with a stunning century — the fastest by an uncapped player in IPL history — scoring 103 off just 42 balls, reaching the milestone in 39 deliveries. His fireworks set the tone for Punjab’s strong total of 219/6.

Middle-order batter Shashank Singh played a steady hand with an unbeaten 50, ensuring momentum continued after Arya’s dismissal.

Chennai Super Kings’ chase was anchored by Devon Conway (69 retired out), supported by Shivam Dube (42) and MS Dhoni (27 not out). However, Punjab’s bowlers held firm in the death overs, restricting CSK to 201/5 and sealing a hard-fought victory.

The win bolsters PBKS’s position in the points table, while the disciplinary action against Maxwell serves as a reminder of the league’s strict adherence to behavioural standards on and off the field.
