New Delhi, Apr 10: Punjabi superstar Gippy Grewal is all set to make waves across the nation with his upcoming historical drama “Akaal: The Unconquered,” and this time, he’s doing it with the backing of Bollywood powerhouse Karan Johar.

Speaking to the singer, actor, and filmmaker opened up about his decision to collaborate with Dharma Productions for the Hindi release of Akaal, expressing that the story deserved a wider audience.

“We felt that our film deserves to be taken out of the boundaries — the boundaries of our regular Punjabi films. So, it should be released in Hindi,” said Gippy. “In Punjab, we watch Tamil and Telugu films dubbed in Hindi. So why shouldn’t our films go beyond Punjabi-speaking audiences too?”

The partnership with Karan Johar, he revealed, came together seamlessly.

“I don't think there is anyone better than Karan Johar… We locked things in the first meeting. So, in the next meeting with Karan, everything happened fast.”

With Dharma Productions coming on board to distribute the film in Hindi, Gippy believes the project has scaled up significantly in reach and visibility.

“After that, we all feel that the film has become bigger. With him, our reach has increased. Now, the film will reach more people. Rest, the film has to do what it has to do.”

Set against the backdrop of 1840s Punjab, Akaal: The Unconquered chronicles the story of Sardar Akaal Singh and his village’s fierce stand against a brutal invasion by Jangi Jahan’s forces following the death of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh. It promises a gripping narrative of honor, courage, and resistance.

The film also features acclaimed actor Gurpreet Ghuggi and singer-actress Nimrat Khaira in pivotal roles. Slated for release on April 10, the film aims to bring Punjabi history and valor to a pan-Indian audience.

Born in Ludhiana, Gippy Grewal is no stranger to cinematic success. He made his debut with Mel Karade Rabba in 2010 and rose to fame with blockbusters like Carry On Jatta, Lucky Di Unlucky Story, Bhaji in Problem, and Jatt James Bond. He also heads two production banners — Humble Motion Pictures and Big Daddy Films — alongside his brother Sippy Grewal.

With Akaal, Gippy steps into a larger arena, carrying the pride of Punjabi cinema onto the national stage — and this time, he's not going alone.
