Mangaluru, Apr 12: Following the directions of the district in-charge minister and the additional chief secretary of the government, the District Urban Development Cell has written to various departments and organisations seeking inputs for preparing a feasibility report on the proposed metro rail project between Mangaluru and Udupi.
The proposed metro project is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing the coastal region's economy and improving the standard of living of its people. The district in-charge minister and the additional chief secretary have directed officials to review the feasibility of the Mangaluru–Udupi metro rail project and take necessary steps accordingly.

The letter outlines that the proposal should consider Mangaluru's status as a commercial hub, its existing infrastructure, medical facilities, educational institutions, and coastal features while preparing the report for submission to the government.
On behalf of the deputy commissioner, the District Urban Development Cell has sent the letter to multiple stakeholders including the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA), Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), city police commissioner, National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), district forest officer (DFO), transport department, Mangalore University, District Industries Centre, tourism department, health department, the operating officer of Mangaluru International Airport, and the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI).

Sat, Apr 12 2025Idea of metro rail is short distance travel in high land traffic cities. Nobody prefers to stand for 1 to 1.5 hour to reach Udupi. In Bengaluru, metro benefited because movement of public is high in dense areas. In Mangalore to Udupi only peak traffic in morning & evening. Commuters feel uncomfortable if they daily made to stand and travel for 1 to 1.5hr. Post that they would prefer bus ride relaxing.. Metro rail project highly cost sensitive to build and operate.

The metro line is planned to traverse key urban, semi-urban, and industrial zones, ensuring connectivity to existing transport hubs, including airports, railway stations, highways, and ports. While the exact station list is subject to the detailed project report, the corridor aims to cover:  • Mangaluru: Central Business Districts, industrial areas, and the airport • Udupi: Residential and commercial zones • Manipal: Educational institutions and healthcare centers

Sat, Apr 12 2025Metro is a must for Udupi and Mangaluru. Maybe in 2nd phase can connect Kundapur as it is a good high density route. We need good Public transport system. Metro is clean, prompt and scalable. It is better if they implement soon as later city will get crowded. Another system is RRTS like Delhi Meerut Corridor. Public should support the initiative.

Instead, add 2nd or 3rd line to the existing railway track, improve existing train stations, improve train stations connectivity roads, better parking facilities and introduce Vande Metro with services running say every hour. Increase the frequency based on the need. The cost of building Metro for 60 km would be around Rs. 20,000 crores. With that money, entire Konkan railway line from Mangaluru till Mumbai can be doubled besides having money to improve train stations.

From udupi to mangalore there will be several stops and may take more rime to travel and it will take longer time than existing private bus between udupi and mangalore
