Attavar KMC Hospital introduces SBRT for prostate cancer in Mangaluru

Media Release

Mangaluru, Apr 15: A 61-year-old patient, initially presenting with urinary complaints, has undergone Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) for prostate cancer at KMC Hospital Attavar Oncology Centre (KMCHAOC) in Mangalore. This marks a significant step forward in the treatment of prostate cancer in the region, as SBRT becomes a viable option for local patients seeking advanced cancer care.

The patient was diagnosed with localized prostate cancer after undergoing a comprehensive evaluation, including a PSMA PET scan and Prostate Biopsy which revealed the localized tumour. Following this, a multidisciplinary uro-oncology tumor board at KMC Hospital Attavar developed a tailored treatment plan for the patient.

SBRT, a highly precise, non-invasive treatment modality, was selected. This advanced form of radiation therapy allows for targeted treatment with minimal impact on surrounding healthy tissue. The entire treatment was carried out on an outpatient basis, with no hospital admission required. The patient underwent five sessions, each lasting just 10 minutes.

This achievement was a result of the collaborative efforts of the hospital’s expert team, including doctors from the radiation oncology department namely Dr Paul Simon, Dr Athiyamaan MS, Dr Sourjya Banerjee, Dr Johan Sunny, and Dr Abhishek Krishna, along with Dr Dilson Lobo and Dr Challapalli Srinivas from the medical physics team. The team also included Dr Sanman KN, urologist, Dr Parikshit, radiologist, Abhiram along with his team of technologists and dedicated team of nurses and supportive staffs.

While SBRT for prostate cancer has been used in various parts of the world, this treatment signifies a significant advancement in Mangalore’s cancer care, offering patients access to one of the most precise and non-invasive cancer treatments available today.

The success of this procedure demonstrates the hospital’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art treatments and highlights the growing capabilities of Mangalore’s medical community. This treatment approach not only improves the quality of care but also reduces the need for patients to travel to larger cities for such advanced treatments.

Started in 1992, KMC Hospital Attavar Oncology Centre (KMCHAOC) is renowned as the first and most advanced and technologically sophisticated cancer treatment centre in Mangalore. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge technology, the centre offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for cancer patients.

With SBRT now available locally, prostate cancer patients in Mangalore have a promising new option for highly effective treatment with minimal disruption to their daily lives.
