Mangaluru, Apr 19: A major mishap was averted during the annual Rathotsava (chariot festival) at the famed Bappanadu Shri Durgaparameshwari Temple in Mulki, as the top portion of the Brahmaratha (chariot) collapsed late Friday night. The video of the incident has since gone viral, creating concern among devotees.
The incident occurred between 1:40 am and 2:00 am on Saturday, during the Brahmarathotsava, a key highlight of the temple's annual Jatra Mahotsava. While the grand chariot was being pulled by thousands of devotees, the upper portion of the structure suddenly gave way and fell to the ground.

At the time of the collapse, several priests were seated inside the chariot. Due to a sudden snapping of the rope used to control the chariot’s movement, the top portion came crashing down. Fortunately, except for one priest who sustained minor injuries, no serious harm was reported.
The unexpected incident caused panic among the large gathering of devotees present. However, after a brief disruption, the festival proceedings were resumed using the Chandra Mandala Rath (alternate chariot), and the event continued without any further hindrance.
Temple authorities ensured that the rest of the Jatra Mahotsava was carried out smoothly and safely.
