New Delhi, Apr 22: A fresh divide has emerged within the Congress over Karnataka’s caste census, with senior leader Veerappa Moily calling the report “unscientific and politically dangerous” a claim swiftly dismissed by party colleague Rashid Alvi.

Moily, a former chief minister, raised concerns about the accuracy of the 2015 survey, warning it could create discord among communities. “The government cannot rush into a decision in a situation which is suspected by many communities,” he said, urging a reassessment or fresh census.

He cited discrepancies in population data, saying the survey showed a 4-6% increase in Muslim population while underreporting many OBC groups, raising doubts about its credibility.

Alvi, however, termed Moily’s remarks “unfair and untimely,” saying the report aligns with Rahul Gandhi’s commitment to social justice. “The census is complete. If Moily had concerns, he should’ve spoken earlier,” he told.

He also denied fears of polarisation, calling Moily’s views personal and reiterating that the data would be made public soon.

Karnataka is the second Congress-ruled state after Telangana to conduct a caste survey, but the internal discord has raised questions about its political implications.
