New Delhi, Apr 23: Indigenously developed HPV test kits are poised to significantly enhance India’s fight against cervical cancer, one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women, according to renowned gynaecologic oncologist, Dr Neerja Bhatla. Speaking at a scientific review event in the national capital, Dr Bhatla, a Padma Shri awardee, highlighted the importance of these affordable kits in strengthening early screening, particularly in rural and underserved regions.
"Vaccination should ideally be administered before the age of 15, and screening should commence after the age of 30," Dr Bhatla stressed, emphasizing the role of both vaccination and screening in preventing cervical cancer. She also noted that the HPV test kits are designed to be user-friendly, making them suitable for use in areas with limited healthcare personnel.
"The kits are easy to use and can be handled by local health workers, which will make screening much more accessible," she added, citing the shortage of trained workers in regions like the Northeast.
While the final cost of the kits is still being determined, Dr Bhatla expressed optimism that they would be more affordable than current options, especially with bulk purchasing through government health programmes.
Union minister for Science & Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh, who was the chief guest at the event, lauded the initiative. He highlighted the critical importance of early detection in saving lives and emphasized that India accounts for 25% of global cervical cancer deaths due to delayed diagnoses. Dr Singh reiterated the broader goal of establishing India as a global leader in preventive healthcare.
