New Delhi, Apr 24: Indian golf is set to scale new heights as the capital city prepares to host a landmark sporting event—the inaugural DP World India Championship, scheduled to take place from October 16 to 19 at the prestigious Delhi Golf Club. The event will form a part of the "Back 9" of the 2025 Race to Dubai and is co-sanctioned with the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI).
This prestigious tournament, carrying a staggering USD 4 million prize purse, is the largest prize fund ever for a golf event held in India, reflecting the country’s growing clout on the international golfing map.
The championship also marks the return of the DP World Tour to Delhi Golf Club for the first time since 2016. The course, steeped in history since the 1930s and famed for hosting the inaugural Indian Open in 1964, has seen multiple upgrades, including a major revamp by Gary Player Design in 2019.
Following the resounding success of the 2025 Indian Open, which saw Spain’s Eugenio Chacarra lift the trophy, the announcement of this new flagship event further builds momentum for professional golf in India.
DP World, the title sponsor since 2022, reiterated its long-term vision for the sport in India. Rizwan Soomar, CEO and MD for DP World’s India region, stated:
"We are committed to growing the game of golf in the country… The DP World India Championship reflects this commitment, ensuring that golf continues to evolve in exciting ways."
Echoing this sentiment, Ben Cowen, Chief Tournament and Operations Officer at the DP World Tour, expressed enthusiasm about the return to the iconic Delhi venue:
"We are thrilled to bring this exciting event to India, in partnership with DP World and the PGTI. Our aim is to nurture golf’s growth in the region and provide top-notch experiences to fans and players alike."
Indian sporting legend and PGTI President Kapil Dev hailed the tournament as a “landmark moment for Indian golf.”
"It will not only elevate India’s presence in international golf but also give our players a chance to compete with global stars in front of a home crowd,” he said.
Raj Khosla, President of the Delhi Golf Club, highlighted the unique blend of sport and heritage that the venue offers, with its layout nestled among 500-year-old Lodhi-era monuments, adding:
"It’s a spectacular setting for a world-class championship and we look forward to hosting golfing excellence in October."
The DP World India Championship will be the eighth of nine events in the final stretch of the 2025 season, setting the stage for the grand finale at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
With international participation, record-breaking prize money, and a venue rich in history and charm, the tournament promises to be a game-changer for Indian golf and a visual treat for fans across the globe.
