Tributes pour in for Dr Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan, renowned space scientist

Bengaluru, Apr 25: Dr Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan, the distinguished Indian space scientist and visionary leader, passed away on Friday morning at the age of 84 in Bengaluru. His monumental contributions to India’s space and education sectors have left an indelible mark on the country’s scientific and academic landscapes.

Born on October 24, 1940, in Ernakulam, Kerala, Dr Kasturirangan's academic journey led him from physics at the University of Mumbai to a doctoral degree in experimental high-energy astronomy from the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad. His remarkable career earned him several prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri (1982), Padma Bhushan (1992), and Padma Vibhushan (2000).

As the chairman of ISRO from 1994 to 2003, Dr Kasturirangan oversaw key developments like the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). His leadership in satellite launches, including IRS-1C, IRS-1D, and the first lunar mission Chandrayaan-1, cemented India’s position as a leader in space technology.

Dr Kasturirangan also played a pivotal role in shaping India's education sector. He chaired the committee that drafted the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aiming to reform the country’s educational framework. His contributions extended to higher education and research as vice-chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University and chairman of the Karnataka Knowledge Commission.

Condolences have poured in from leaders across the political spectrum. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed shock at the passing of the space scientist, emphasizing his immense contributions to ISRO and his deep love for the state. Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda also paid tribute to Dr Kasturirangan’s legacy, while BJP State president B Y Vijayendra extended his condolences to the scientist’s family and admirers.

Dr Kasturirangan’s passing marks the end of an era in India's space and education sectors, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.
