Bengaluru, May 2: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star Virat Kohli has swiftly addressed a social media stir involving a "like" on a fan page post dedicated to actress Avneet Kaur. The incident, which sparked a flurry of speculation on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), saw fans even dragging Kohli's wife, Anushka Sharma, into the conversation, prompting the cricketer to clarify the situation and put an end to the rumors.
On May 2, users noticed Kohli's verified Instagram account listed in the "likes" section of a fan page post featuring Kaur. Though the post was harmless, it quickly went viral, with screenshots circulating, comments flowing in, and rumors ranging from technical glitches to questions about intent.
While some brushed off the incident as a simple mistake or even a managerial error, others quickly took the gossip further, tagging Anushka Sharma in their comments and fueling baseless speculation.
Taking control of the situation, Kohli responded via his Instagram Stories with a calm and direct statement. Without specifically referencing the post or Kaur, Kohli explained:
“I'd like to clarify that while clearing my feed, it appears the algorithm may have mistakenly registered an interaction. There was absolutely no intent behind it. I request that no unnecessary assumptions be made. Thank you for your understanding.”
The ‘like’ was subsequently removed from the post.
While such algorithm-driven occurrences are not unusual, especially for high-profile figures with massive social media followings, the speculation that followed highlighted the intense scrutiny celebrities like Kohli face online.
On the professional front, Kohli remains focused on his IPL campaign. The 35-year-old has been in excellent form, contributing significantly to RCB's strong performance this season. With seven wins in 10 matches, RCB sits second on the points table, tied with Mumbai Indians but trailing by Net Run Rate.
Kohli and his team will be back in action this Saturday in Bengaluru, where they will take on the Chennai Super Kings, who have already been eliminated from playoff contention in IPL 2025.
