Mumbai, May 5: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Monday called for collaborative efforts between Microsoft and government departments to design AI-based skill development courses, aimed at addressing the rising demand for tech-savvy manpower across sectors like agriculture, industry, trade, education, and healthcare.

Chairing a high-level review meeting at the Mantralaya, Pawar emphasized the need for tailor-made courses for students in ITIs, polytechnic institutions, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He directed the departments of industry, technical education, and skill development to act as nodal agencies for guiding and coordinating this initiative.

“Increasing the use of Artificial Intelligence in all departments has become the need of the hour,” said Pawar. “Everyone, including Microsoft, who comes forward to help the state in this field, will be welcomed.”

The Dy CM highlighted that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has already been signed with Microsoft to facilitate the effective use of AI in the state. This includes the establishment of AI Centres of Excellence that will boost efficiency, transparency, and digital literacy in governance.

Pawar also revealed plans to set up an IT park or innovation hub at Baramati through Krishi Vigyan Kendra, drawing inspiration from Microsoft’s Centre of Excellence in Noida and Google’s IT Park in Hyderabad.

The meeting further discussed launching AI training programs at Baramati’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra, setting up world-class labs, enhancing the application of AI in agriculture, and integrating Microsoft’s e-Sanjeevani technology to aid cancer treatment at Baramati’s Medical College, Silver Jubilee Hospital, and other state-run hospitals.

During his recent India visit, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also praised the use of AI in Maharashtra’s Baramati Co-operative. He cited how small sugarcane farmers benefited significantly from AI applications—improving crop yields, reducing chemical use, and conserving water through drone and satellite-based geospatial data delivered in local languages.

Pawar assured full support from the state government for the AI initiative and said the collaboration with Microsoft aims to empower the youth and improve productivity across key economic sectors.
