Mangaluru, May 8: A pedestrian woman was tragically killed on the spot after being struck by a car near Pandit House in Kuthar.

The deceased has been identified as Poornima (59), a resident of Pandit House.

The accident occurred when she was crossing the road after alighting from a bus, and a car reportedly driven by a medical student hit her, resulting in her immediate death.

Poornima was returning from a wedding-related visit. Her nephew's wedding (husband’s brother’s son) was scheduled for May 16. She had gone to the house to help with preparations and was on her way back when the tragedy occurred. What was to be a festive household has now plunged into mourning.

Locals pointed out that the Pandit House stretch on the Thokkottu–Mangaluru University road had been dug up for pipeline work and was left riddled with potholes due to a lack of proper resurfacing. Though a portion of the road was recently asphalted, a deep pothole still remained, allegedly contributing to the mishap as the driver lost control.

Police from Mangaluru South Traffic Station have registered a case. Poornima is survived by her husband and a son.
