Trump administration cuts additional $450 million in Harvard grants

Daijiworld Media Network - Washington

Washington, May 13: The Trump administration has intensified its crackdown on Harvard University by canceling an additional $450 million in federal research grants, following the release of a critical internal report on antisemitism at the Ivy League school.

This latest funding cut adds to an earlier freeze of $2.2 billion in grants announced in April, placing Harvard under growing pressure amid multiple federal investigations. These include scrutiny over its tax-exempt status, its admission policies, and eligibility to host international students.

On May 5, Education Secretary Linda McMahon informed Harvard President Alan Garber, who is Jewish, that the university would no longer qualify for new federally funded research grants. The administration claimed the decision affects grants from eight federal agencies, although it has not clarified which specific grants or programs are impacted.

The Education Department and Harvard have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the scope or implementation of the latest funding cut.

The move underscores the administration’s continued clash with elite academic institutions and comes as Harvard grapples with internal tensions and external criticism over its handling of antisemitism on campus.
