Udupi, Nov 6: A commercial complex constructed by the civic administration on the main road connecting Syndicate Circle to the deputy commissioner's office at Rajathadri in Manipal has remained unused for a long time, triggering public criticism over the alleged negligence of the municipal authorities.
The building, reportedly constructed at a cost of several crores of rupees from public funds, has remained locked without serving its intended purpose. The shutters of the shops are showing signs of rust, while the paint on the walls is gradually fading, reflecting the deteriorating condition of the unused structure.

Located in a prime area with considerable public movement, the commercial complex is considered suitable for business activities. If opened, it could provide easy access to essential goods and services for the public, create livelihood opportunities for small traders and generate rental revenue for the municipal administration.
However, the continued closure of the complex has raised questions among the public about why a valuable public asset is being left unutilised despite its potential benefits.
Social worker Nithyananda Olakadu has urged the municipal authorities to take immediate steps to make the complex functional by opening the shops through an auction or rental process. He stressed that a building constructed using crores of rupees in public money should not be allowed to deteriorate due to administrative inaction.
He also pointed out the shortage of government-run rehabilitation centres for beggars and shelters for destitute people in Udupi district. If the building cannot be utilised for commercial purposes, the administration should seriously consider converting it into a shelter for the homeless, destitute and other vulnerable people, he suggested.
Public infrastructure created using taxpayers' money should serve the needs of the people rather than remain locked and deteriorate over time. Residents have called upon the authorities to act promptly and ensure that the commercial complex is put to meaningful public use.
