Washington, May 18: Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will hold separate phone calls on Monday with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, aiming to push for a ceasefire agreement between the two warring nations.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump stated, “I will be speaking, by telephone, to President Vladimir Putin of Russia on Monday, at 10:00 a.m.” He said the conversation will focus on halting the ongoing “bloodbath,” which he claimed is killing more than 5,000 soldiers weekly on both sides, as well as addressing trade-related issues.
Following his call with Putin, Trump said he will speak to President Zelensky, and later, hold discussions with various NATO leaders alongside Zelensky.

“Hopefully it will be a productive day,” Trump added, expressing optimism that the effort might lead to a ceasefire.
This diplomatic initiative comes on the heels of renewed dialogue between Russia and Ukraine, following a meeting in Istanbul, Türkiye, on Friday. Both sides agreed to a large-scale prisoner exchange, involving 1,000 individuals from each side, and committed to holding another round of negotiations.
The outcome of Trump’s proposed calls could signal a fresh approach to mediation efforts as the conflict continues to escalate.
