Mangaluru, May 20: Mangaluru has been witnessing a heavy downpour since the morning of May 20, following the issuance of a red alert in Dakshina Kannada for the next two days.

The intense rainfall has caused significant damage in areas such as Kavoor, Adyapady, and Kodialbail. In these localities, compound walls have collapsed, drain water has entered homes, and mud has accumulated in the premises of several residences.

At Kavoor Junction, drain water overflowed from private land, causing severe soil erosion. Due to the lack of proper drainage systems, the water—mixed with mud—flooded roads and entered residential compounds.

Local residents, who have been raising complaints for years, claim there has been no response from either officials or the area’s corporator. The former corporator, whose house is in clear view of the affected area, has reportedly failed to acknowledge or act on the residents’ concerns.

In Adyapady, a portion of a nearby hill collapsed due to the rainfall, resulting in a residence being completely inundated with mud and water. The premises were left blanketed in thick mud, severely impacting the household.

Meanwhile, in Kodialbail, a retaining wall of an apartment complex collapsed due to the heavy rains. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported.

This is the effect of felling down of trees to build houses and filling up the land with loose soil. One rain is enough to flush out the soil and without having the tree roots it is a disaster in waiting. At Mangalore the British time water drainage have been filled with soil and made into beautiful footpaths. The only way water to flow is on the road and no path is available then to break the low-lying area house walls and take its route. Water has its own ways to flow and no restrictions will hinder it. The first day rain itself created havoc. Imagine the fate when the monsoon season in progress. Our development model if flowed
