Qatar, May 22: In a remarkable display of unity, tradition, and sporting spirit, Mangalore Cricket Club (MCC) Qatar hosted a grand Mangalorean Day on May 9 at Al Jazeera Academy, Abu Hamour. This event, held under the club’s unifying motto 'Yeya Ek Kutamb Bhandhya' (Let’s Be One Family), witnessed the participation of over 500 Konkani-speaking Mangalureans.

The event saw eight Varado teams from Mangaluru and Udupi parishes face off in a fun-filled competition, bringing back memories of the games everyone loved as kids back home. The atmosphere was electric with cheer, color, and community bonding as participants showcased athleticism, enthusiasm, and Mangalurean pride.

Participating teams and Gurkars:

1. Amche Udupi – Avinash Dsouza

2. Coastal warriors – Lester Pais

3. United Probhus Doha – Nishan D’Souza

4. Episcopal Warriors – Arnold D'Souza

5. Kodialchi Tharan – Mishal Lobo

6. Konkani Warriors – Ryan Renjar

The event began with a prayer led by MCC Advisor Sunil D’Silva, setting a tone of unity and gratitude. The sports festivities kicked off with a game of Lagori, followed by a variety of traditional and athletic competitions such as Break the Pot, Hit the Wicket, Dog and the Bone, Water Relay, and a fun-filled March Past by all teams. There were also engaging games and activities like frog race, book race, lemon and spoon and musical chair curated especially for children, led by Mishal Lobo.

A lively fancy fete brought joy to both children and adults, while the delicious spread of authentic Mangalurean cuisine featuring favourites like chicken sukka, pathrade, golibaje, ellu juice, and binda juice added a rich flavour to the day. The festive spirit was truly infectious, as participants of all ages, from little ones to senior members of the community, joined in with enthusiasm and pride, making it a memorable family affair.

MCC president Naveen D’Souza, in his address, highlighted the purpose of the event:

“Our goal was to unite Mangalureans from all parishes of the Mangalore and Udupi dioceses, to meet, mingle, and showcase talents in an atmosphere of joy and fellowship. Seeing the overwhelming response and spirited participation was truly heartening.”

He expressed sincere gratitude to the Executive Committee, volunteers, and supporters who contributed to the smooth and successful execution of the event.

The games were officiated by referees Sadananda Rai and Niyaz, ensuring a fair and seamless conduct of the competitions. The entire programme was skillfully compered by Mercia Dsouza, who also announced the winners of the children’s games. A highlight of the event was the 'Guess the Weight of the Kombo' competition, which drew enthusiastic participation. The winner of this popular contest was Ashwin Cutinha.

The event concluded with a grand March Past during the closing ceremony, with each Varado team presenting unique themes and coordinated team spirit. Trophies were awarded to outstanding teams and individual performers by MCC founder member Jerald D’Mello, advisors Ronald Saldanha, Sunil D’Silva, Riana Pinto, and president Naveen D’Souza.
