Constitution kept India united in crisis: CJI Gavai

Allahabad, May 31: Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai on Saturday said the strength and unity of India during times of crisis must be credited to the Constitution.

Speaking at the inauguration of advocate chambers and a multi-level parking facility at the Allahabad High Court, CJI Gavai said, “Whenever the country has faced a crisis, it has remained united and strong the credit for this goes to the Constitution.”

Recalling debates during the framing of the Constitution, he said, “Some thought it was too federal, while others felt it was too unitary. But Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar had clarified that it was neither wholly federal nor wholly unitary. He gave us a Constitution that would keep India united in peace and war.”

CJI Gavai noted that while many neighbouring countries are struggling, India continues to progress, thanks to the strength of its constitutional framework.

He also stressed that ensuring justice for the last citizen remains a collective duty. “Be it the legislature, executive or judiciary it is our fundamental duty to reach out to the citizen in need of justice,” he added.
