Mumbai, Jun 1: In a shocking case of domestic violence, a 45-year-old man from Chembur was arrested on Saturday for allegedly setting his wife on fire following an argument at their Vashi Naka residence.

According to the police, the woman sustained 45% burn injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Sion Hospital.

The accused, an unemployed alcoholic, lives with his wife and 17-year-old son. The woman, a domestic worker and sole breadwinner, reportedly refused her husband’s sexual advances on Friday, stating she was getting late for work. The refusal led to a heated argument.

A police official said the woman, in a moment of emotional distress, allegedly poured kerosene on herself and searched for a matchstick. In a fit of rage, her husband lit a stove, ignited a piece of paper, and threw it at her, setting her ablaze.

Neighbours, alerted by her screams, rushed in to douse the flames and informed the police. The woman suffered severe burns to her chest, abdomen, arms, and legs.

Based on statements from the victim and witnesses, the RCF Police registered a case of attempt to murder and arrested the husband. He has been booked under sections 109(1), 115(2), and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
