Mumbai CBI Sleuth Awarded Police Medal


Mumbai, Jan 26 (IANS): A CBI inspector, who cracked several major corruption cases has been awarded Police Medal for meritorious services in the Republic Day honours, an official said here Wednesday.

B. M. Chonkar, Inspector with the Anti-Corruption Bureau, has been posted with the CBI since 2006.

During his tenure in Mumbai, Bangalore and Goa, Chonkar trapped and probed several sensitive cases involving top government officials, and investigated major cases like the Indian Bank scam and the Bhatkal murder.

Among the corruption cases he successfully cracked include trapping of former Maharashtra & Goa chief post-master general M. S. Bali, additional chief income tax commissioner Sumitra Banerjee and joint chief income tax commissioner R. K. Gupta.
