Tragic lunch: 5 medical students killed, nearly 40 injured as flight crashes into hostel

Ahmedabad, June 12: What began as a routine lunch break ended in horror for students of BJ Medical College, when an Air India aircraft, moments after take-off, crashed into their hostel building on Wednesday afternoon. The impact killed five students—four undergraduates and one postgraduate—and left nearly 40 others injured.

Plates of unfinished food and toppled chairs in the hostel canteen tell the silent story of panic and devastation. Eyewitnesses said the hostel mess was full of students when the plane tore through the structure without warning, leaving chaos in its wake.

Dr Shyam Govind, a staff doctor who sustained injuries, said, “Many were in the mess. It happened so suddenly—there was no time to react. Around 30–40 students are injured. A few are in critical condition.”

Ramila, mother of a survivor, recalled the nightmare: “My son was in the hostel for lunch. When the crash happened, he jumped from the second floor to save himself. He’s injured but safe—I spoke to him.”

Students were seen helping each other escape the debris even as emergency responders rushed to the scene. The trauma is expected to leave a deep scar on the BJMC community, not just from the physical injuries but the emotional toll of losing classmates over a midday meal.

just imagining how the sound would be when a 787 boeing falls on a building? it will take quite some time for those nearby areas also to come out of the shock. Wish speedy recovery to the injured and sadgati for the departed souls.

The unfortunate medical students were not on the flight, yet they tragically lost their lives. This is deeply saddening. May God grant peace to their souls and provide good health to those who are injured, as well as strength to their families to bear this sorrow.
