Vancouver, Jun 22: Indian-origin rapper Genesis Yasmine Mohanraj, known by her stage name Tommy Genesis, has landed in controversy after her latest music video True Blue sparked outrage for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. In the video, the Canada-based artist is seen portraying herself in a manner resembling a Hindu goddess while also using Christian religious symbols in an explicit fashion.

Tommy, of Tamil and Swedish descent, is seen painted in blue, adorned with gold jewellery and a red bindi—strongly resembling a Hindu deity. She is also seen posing with a Christian cross, licking it and using it in provocative ways, including placing it near her posterior. The visuals have infuriated both Hindu and Christian communities, with many accusing her of “blasphemy” and disrespect.

“Her Indian descent makes it very likely that her makeup is deliberately done to hurt Hindu sentiments,” one user posted on social media platform X. Another commented, “She’s hurting everyone’s sentiments—maybe on purpose, to go viral. Cheap tactics.”

“She openly mocks both Hindu and Christian faiths. This isn’t art—this is pure disrespect,” said another angry user.

Mohanraj, born in Vancouver and holding Canadian citizenship, has previously described herself as a “fetish rapper,” often incorporating themes of gender, sexuality, and rebellion in her music. In 2016, she was dubbed “the internet’s most rebellious underground rap queen” by an international magazine.

Despite the backlash, the rapper has not issued any public statement yet. Social media continues to witness strong calls for accountability and demands for the video’s removal.
