Amber heard returns to acting post-Johnny Depp trial; Joins cast of Jeremy O Harris'

Los Angeles, Jun 24: After a long hiatus following her much-publicized legal battle with ex-husband Johnny Depp, actress Amber Heard is making her acting comeback — not on screen, but on stage. The 38-year-old actress has been cast in the upcoming theatre production Spirit of the People, written by renowned playwright Jeremy O. Harris.

The play is set to premiere at the prestigious Williamstown Theatre Festival this July and marks Heard’s first acting project since the defamation trial that captured global headlines in 2022. Heard herself confirmed the news by posting a selfie with the play’s director, captioning it, "In my theatre era x," signaling her shift toward stage performance.

Spirit of the People brings together a diverse and dynamic ensemble cast, including 13 Reasons Why star Brandon Flynn, Ato Blankson-Wood, James Cusati-Moyer, Amandla Jahava, Emma Ramos, Julian Sanchez, Zachary Booth, Tonatiuh, and Lío Mehiel. According to the official synopsis, the production delves into “uncomfortable truths about land and what it means to destroy it,” offering audiences a powerful and thought-provoking narrative.

This latest development in Heard’s career comes nearly two years after the conclusion of her defamation trial with Johnny Depp. Although the couple had divorced in 2017, the trial stemmed from a 2018 op-ed penned by Heard, in which she referred to herself as a survivor of sexual violence — without naming Depp. The actor later filed a lawsuit, claiming defamation, and the jury eventually ruled in his favour.

Heard’s comeback is not limited to the stage. She recently shared a major life update, announcing the birth of twins. Celebrating Mother's Day 2025, she introduced her newborn daughter Agnes and son Ocean to the world via a touching photo of their tiny feet. Heard is already a mother to her first daughter, Oonagh, born in 2021.

Her reappearance in the acting sphere — particularly in theatre — is seen as a new chapter, both professionally and personally, for the actress who has remained largely away from the spotlight since the trial.
