Navi Mumbai, Jun 25: A 65-year-old man suffering from repeated falls, weakness, and drowsiness was successfully treated for an internal brain bleed at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi, through minimally invasive endoscopic surgery.

The patient, Jenna, had experienced a fall three months earlier. His family initially attributed his symptoms to aging, but when his imbalance and fatigue worsened, they sought medical help. A neurological evaluation led by Dr Samir Kale, Consultant – Neuro and Spine Surgery, revealed he had Membranous Chronic Subdural Hematoma (CSDH) — a condition where layered blood collects inside the skull, compressing the brain.

Jenna, who had a history of heart stenting and was on blood thinners, was at higher risk for internal bleeding. “Due to vague symptoms, diagnosis was delayed. Using a 2 cm incision and an endoscope, we removed the layered hematoma safely and precisely,” Dr Kale said.

Unlike typical hematomas requiring larger surgery, the endoscopic approach ensured minimal trauma, lower infection risk, and faster recovery. Within 24 hours of the procedure, Jenna began regaining strength and balance, and was fully independent within a week.

Dr Kale warned that Membranous CSDH often goes undetected in elderly patients on blood thinners. He urged early medical attention for symptoms like limb weakness or slowed movement, noting these are often mistaken for normal aging but may signal serious conditions.
