Raipur, Jun 27: Renowned Hindi poet and Padma Shri awardee Dr Surendra Dubey passed away late Thursday night in Raipur following a cardiac arrest. He was 72.

Dr Dubey had been admitted to the Advanced Cardiac Institute after suffering a heart attack on Wednesday night. Though he underwent angioplasty, he succumbed to a second cardiac arrest around 11:40 pm the next day, family sources said.

His final rites will be held in Raipur today, with a large gathering of literary figures, political leaders, and admirers expected to bid him farewell.

Born in 1953 in Bemetara district of Chhattisgarh, Dr Dubey began his professional life as an Ayurvedic physician but found his true calling in poetry. With a signature style of humour laced with social commentary, he rose to national fame through his television appearances and performances at Kavi Sammelans and cultural events.

In 2010, he was conferred the Padma Shri in recognition of his contribution to Hindi literature and Hasya Kavita.

“A part of the poetic universe is gone today. Dr Surendra Dubey’s words will echo forever in our hearts,” poet Dr Kumar Vishwas shared in a heartfelt tribute on social media.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai also mourned the poet’s demise, calling it an “irreparable loss” to the literary world. “With his unique humour, sharp satire and creativity, he not only lit up stages across the country and abroad, but also brought global recognition to the Chhattisgarhi language,” the CM said.

The Chief Minister visited the poet’s residence to offer condolences. The state government is considering a condolence resolution to honour Dr Dubey’s contributions to literature and culture.
