Train derails near Chitteri Station in Tamil Nadu, no casualties reported

Ranipet, Jun 28: A mild scare gripped passengers and locals at Chitteri Railway Station in Tamil Nadu's Ranipet district on Friday after the Arakkonam–Katpadi MEMU Passenger Train (No. 66057) derailed shortly after departing the station. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.

Eyewitnesses said a loud noise was heard moments before the loco pilot brought the train to an abrupt halt. Visuals from the site showed a visibly snapped section of the railway track at the derailment point, raising questions about track safety in the area.

“I can confirm there is no injury or loss of life. For other information, railway authorities would be the best to share,” said a senior police officer at the scene.

While the Southern Railway is yet to issue an official statement regarding the cause of the derailment, the extent of service disruptions, or a timeline for full restoration, emergency crews and railway personnel have already begun restoration work. Teams are engaged in clearing the track and assessing any structural damage to the railway infrastructure.

The incident has raised fresh concerns due to Chitteri’s troubled accident history — most notably the 2011 train collision that claimed 11 lives and left over 70 injured on the same railway stretch.
